South Kilworth House, Leicestershire

Nestled in the village of South Kilworth in Leicestershire, the South Kilworth House marks an elegant statement of modern residential architecture by JWA Architects. This project demonstrates how contemporary design can sit comfortably within a traditional context — delivering refined living for today, while respecting heritage and place-making. According to the practice’s portfolio, this home “where modern minimal architecture meets with traditional design” emphasises glass, aluminium and hardwood as key materials.
Project Brief & Context
The client envisioned a home that would feel both open and intimate; modern in its aesthetic, yet deeply connected to its setting. The brief required a building that would celebrate light, transparency and connection with the landscape without disregarding the rural, vernacular context of Leicestershire.
JWA Architects’ approach was to embed modern forms into the site subtly, using materiality and form to bridge tradition and innovation.
Design Concept
From the outset, the design language prioritised clarity of form and purity of material. Large expanses of glazing allow the home to be visually tied to its outdoor environment, bringing natural light deep into the architecture. Meanwhile, crisp aluminium framing and warm hardwood elements create a tactile contrast — a dialogue between cool minimalism and organic warmth. In essence: contemporary in expression, rooted in place.
Materials & Detailing
Glass & Transparency – Full-height windows and sliding glazed panels not only optimise daylight and views, but support a sense of permeability between indoors and out.
Aluminium – Used for framing and external elements, this material gives precision and structural clarity, reinforcing the modern aesthetic.
Hardwood – Warm timber cladding and interior joinery soften the palette and connect to the site’s traditional characteristics.
Together, these materials balance durability, visual impact and the human scale of a home.
Context & Place-making
Rather than imposing a dramatic departure, the design of South Kilworth House responds respectfully to its surroundings. The form aligns with neighbouring building proportions; the material palette is chosen to complement the local vernacular; and the landscaped setting is configured to integrate with the architecture rather than competing with it. In doing so, the home acts as a quietly confident modern residence that still feels rooted.
Living Experience
Inside, the home is conceived around how people live — not simply how it looks. Open-plan living delivers flexibility, while carefully placed glazed elements frame views and invite daylight. The material contrasts create texture and warmth. Each space is crafted to respond to daily rhythms: informal gatherings, quiet retreats, connection with the outside. In short: a house designed for real life, not just exhibition.
Sustainability & Considerations
While the focus is aesthetic and experiential, the project also considers environmental and contextual responsibility. Transparency and daylight reduce reliance on artificial lighting; high-quality materials ensure longevity; and the design’s sensitivity to site context reflects a sustainable mindset in terms of place and cultural legacy.
Outcomes & Take-aways
A modern residence that elegantly bridges innovation and tradition.
A material palette that supports both visual impact and lived-in comfort.
A home rooted in its context, not isolated from it.
A demonstration of how high-quality residential architecture can serve both aesthetic ambition and daily lifestyle.
For the team at JWA Architects, South Kilworth House is a testament to the belief that contemporary homes can and should respond to place, people and purpose.
