A bold hotel design incorporating smart use of light and space

Client:
McLaren Construction

Location:
Uxbridge Road, Ealing

Sector:
Hospitality & Hotels

This 99 bedroom, 7-storey hotel on a challengingly narrow site in Ealing was carefully designed to achieve an architectural synergy with local commercial buildings whilst providing the best possible hotel guest experience.

From the outset, the hotel was designed and articulated to act as a complementary element to the neighbouring office building, matching its height and width to create a pleasing symmetry either side of the access road.

The 4th and 5th floor levels to the rear are stepped back to reduce the sense of enclosure to the residential properties behind and minimise overlooking.

Through a landscaped drop-off area to the hotel frontage we also retained the Boulevard style that characterises the local area.

The flanking of the site by adjacent properties presented a challenge in ensuring that all guest rooms received adequate daylight, whilst minimising the visual impact to residential properties at the rear. Our solution was to design the general floor plan around two vertical solid cores front and back, abutting the neighbouring property. These cores create a vertical light well, allowing natural daylight to permeate all the way to the ground floor level bar/cafe as well as guest rooms above.

The main facade is non-load bearing and is expressed as full height openings punctuating the stone effect skin wrapping the upper floors. Spandrel panels integrated within the openings provide natural ventilation to the bedrooms.
